One of the first steps in the process of treatment at a drug rehab is for addicts to share their life story as well as their experiences with a group or with their counsellor. Here, being completely honest is imperative to their recovery. The more honest they are willing to become, the better their chances of finding long-term recovery and finding a new, happier way of life. Practising this unwavering honesty means talking about the things they may have kept secret for the better part of their lives. As they will soon learn, “secrets keep you sick,” and “shame dies on exposure.” Sharing one’s experiences, feelings and opinions with others will not only help the addict to uncover deep and hidden truths about themselves but will allow others to relate to their feelings and in doing so, to demonstrate to them and the members of the group that they are not alone in their struggles and that together, meaningful changes can be made.
